Volkswagen Looks to Make Hover Cars a Reality

It's a dream of all of ours in the greater Boston area that is carried out in Hollywood films: the hover car. While all that might emphasize the 'fiction' in science-fiction as we currently know it, Volkswagen actually is putting together some idea to turn hover cars from fiction to reality.

The German automaker has created some mock images of what they envision a hover car to look like, and is in the very early stages of developing a plan to see if the concepts can be built. In the photos released online, we can see it won't look anything like a new Volkswagen you'd find on our lot here at Boston Volkswagen. Instead, the aptly named 'VW Hover Car' will take on a spherical shape, and come in the form of a two-passenger vehicle. The sides have been flattened out and the Hover Car concept is operated using joystick controls.

It looks really cool to us, kind of like a 21st Century George Jetson ride. Volkswagen has said that in order for a Hover Car to make it out on the streets of Boston, we'll have to see a long stretch of electromagnetic roads laid down that can keep the vehicles on track.

Again, this is only a sketch, and still in the very early stages, but we think it's encouraging. After all, if Volkswagen could build a car that can practically drive it self and get it approved for use in Nevada, we think they'll be able to pull off a Hover Car down the line.

So while we can't promise you'll find a Hover Car at Boston Volkswagen, located at 43 North Beacon Street Watertown, MA 02472, we do have plenty of quality new Volkswagen models like the 2012 VW Passat that we can discuss further with you and arrange a test drive.
