Volkswagen Channel the Force of the Bark Side for 2012 Super Bowl Ad

No one would argue that the primary purpose of commercials is to inform viewers of a product or service. However, Boston Volkswagen also feels that most would agree with us in saying that television ads can also offer a snippet of entertainment. Take for example last year's Volkswagen Super Bowl spot called "The Force." Not only did the commercial present the 2012 Volkswagen Passat, but it provided a handful of laughs with its spoof on Star Wars.
This year, in order to follow up the oh-so-popular ad which garnered around 50 million hits on YouTube, VW had to come up with something equally amusing...if not more so. The automaker's solution? Dogs. Singing dogs to be exact. As a teaser for the 2012 VW Super Bowl commercial, marketing gurus released a forty-second clip showing a chorus of vocal pups barking the Star Wars Imperial March. Then, for the actual Super Bowl spot, VW took a bit of a different doggy angle. Conveying the message, "Back. And better than ever."1, the commercial follows an overweight pooch as it swims and sprints its way to a slimmer figure...all in the hopes of chasing down an alluring new Volkswagen car of course.
Though the advertisement plays off its predecessor with the title "The Dog Strikes Back," it holds few other Star Wars innuendos. For the game day, Volkswagen did ad in an extra ending in which Aliens sit around a Star Wars cantina and debate whether the pudgy pooch or last year's pint-sized Darth Vader is funnier.
If you haven't seen "The Dog Strikes Back" already, Boston Volkswagen suggests you check it out on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-9EYFJ4Clo.
